Tri City Washington economic development proponents breathed a collective sigh of relief Tuesday night when the Richland City Council voted in favor of giving ConAgra the option to buy waterfront land at Columbia Point.

Mayor Rob Welch and Councilwoman Sheila Sullivan dissented in the 4-2 vote, saying they’d like the company to look at other locations in Richland, including waterfront land at the Port of Benton in north Richland and Spaulding Business Park in the Richland Y.

Richland has been negotiating with ConAgra since late 2006 for a four-month, $10,000 option on 7.7 acres known as Tract D, as well as a $1-per-year lease on 6.5 acres of old city landfill between Tract D and the Columbia River.

The land would become home to new corporate headquarters for ConAgra subsidiary Lamb Weston, which would consolidate the potato processing company’s Kennewick offices with other Tri-City operations, as well as possibly moving its sales office from Boise.
