Franklin County Wash

Seated at Pasco - one of the Tri-Cities –Franklin County is one of the many counties located in Washington State. Franklin County was named after the famous Benjamin Franklin, and was formed out of the Whitman County on November 28, 1883. The 2000 census reflects a population of 49,347 in the area with an average density of 15 square kilometers.

The County boasts of a total area of 3,277 square kilometers or 1,265 square miles, of which 3,218 square kilometers (1,242 square miles) is land and only 1.81% of its region is water. The prominent geographical landmarks of the County are the Columbia River , Hanford Nuclear Reservation site and the Columbia basinHistoric Pasco Court House comprising of Juniper Dunes Wilderness and ‘ Snake River. Franklin County is bordered by Adams County in the North, Whitman County in the East, Walla Walla County , Benton County in the Southeast, and finally Grant County in the Northwest side.

The census recognized communities include Basin City , Connell, Kahlotus, Mesa, Pasco and West Pasco . AS per 2000 census, the region houses 14,840 households constituting 11,604 families. The population reflects majority of whites (61.91%) residing in the area. Other races that follow in rather scattered numbers (only around one-two percent) are African Americans, Native Americans, Asians and Pacific Islanders.   Other miscellaneous races constitute 28.98% of the population. The total Hispanic or Latino population is 46.67% in the region.

The approximate fifteen thousand households comprised of 45% with children less than 18 years of age living with parents. The percentage of married couples was 60.80% and the households without husbands were 11.40%. The Households had 17.80% of them run by individuals. The average household size was 3.26 and the average family size was 3.67. The average age, according to the census, was 28 years. The census also revealed more number of males ( 109.10) for every hundred females in the region. The median income of a household in the County worked out to be $38,991 and the median income of a family was $41,967. Male counterparts reflected better income earning than their female counterparts, $32,209 vis-à-vis $24,533 to be precise. The per capita income in the region worked out to be $15,459. About 19.20% of population lives below poverty line, comprising of 19.20% of population.

Among the recreational opportunities on offer are two splendid state parks. Tugaloo State Park near Lavonia is a rugged peninsula and a beautiful Lake Hartwell.
