For hundreds of years, the Chemnapum Indians gathered and camped in the mild, dry climate to trade, fish and pasture their horses. As the Northern Pacific Railroad built a bridge across the Columbia River from Pasco in 1883-1884 on its way to the coast, several hundred railroad workers stayed in what is now Kennewick Washington. Kennewick Wa began to grow in 1903 when the Northern Pacific started bringing water to the community in the form of an irrigation canal. Agriculture rapidly became a major industry in the small town.
