Non Farm Job Growth Fuels Tri-Cities Economy

High job growth in the nonfarm sector over the last year augurs well for the Tri-Cities economy, the state’s regional economist reported Tuesday.
The number of jobs in the Tri-Cities rose by 2,400 over a year ago to 92,800, creating momentum for further economic growth, said regional state economist Dean Schau.
The local economy is showing robust growth despite losing about 500 retail jobs and more than 200 jobs in the hospitality sector in seasonal January layoffs, Schau said. This is normal, because merchants pare payrolls at the end of the holidays. In December, retail offered a record 11,900 jobs, he said.
For the rest of 2007, more jobs are expected to open up at Hanford’s vitrification plant and in highway construction.
