Spring Cleaning Window Blinds
March 12th, 2007
Spring cleaning is a tradition done in the end of winter days and the dawn of spring. People living in places with four seasons find it hard to clean their house during the winter days. Every inch of the house had to be cleaned to free from dust and layers of soot accumulated from the methods of heating and lighting during the winter days. The sunlight in early spring also reveals the cobwebs and dust on room corners and windows particularly the window blinds.
An organized spring cleaning can be done on five vital areas of the house: the kitchen, the bathroom, the living room, dining room and the bedrooms. The objective is to clean up the cluttered things and freshen up the rooms to be ready for the spring. To make things easier, you can make a checklist or action plan on the major cleaning tasks for each portion of the house. If you have darker rooms, fixing dysfunctional bulbs to improve lighting may aid you. It would also be best if you prepare the tools you need in cleaning the house.
While spring cleaning could be tiresome, you can apply your own styles to make this tradition enjoyable. Be sure that your spring cleaning is fit on your schedule (best on weekends) and your energy. If you have kids in your family, you can encourage each of them to participate the cleaning operation. You can add music or fun while cleaning your house. Once you have a solid plan, you should determine which task you to carry out first. Many people prefer to begin by cleaning one room before the other. They usually feel more satisfied with one room completed at a time than cleaning everything all at once.
The best task to do for each room is cleaning of window treatments (i.e., window blinds, shades and shutters). For most blinds, you only need to have a feather duster or a soft vacuum attachment to clean your blinds and maintain its new looks. However, you should take precautions when using cleaning solutions or products. If feather duster or soft vacuum attachment fails to clean aluminum or vinyl-type blinds, you can alternatively get a piece of cloth and damp it with warm water or mild detergent to clean over them. If your window blinds are made of wood, the conventional methods would do. However, when it fails to work, you can use a cleaning product especially made for cleaning or polishing wooden blinds slats. Never use water or water-based solutions for your wooden shades because it may permanently damage your blinds. Water is only recommended for use if your blinds are fabric-made. Even so, be it your last option, since using a mild detergent and sponge blotting is more effective.
Removing your blinds for cleaning would be a good decision than dusting it while hanging. Doing such may reveal your blinds concealed portions of the blinds that accumulated dust and dirt. It also helps you decide whether you need to clean your window glass and corners.
It is important to remember that you do not need to wait for another spring cleaning just to clean your house. Regular cleaning to window blinds and shades (and all other things) can help preserve the looks and maintain a favorable atmosphere of your house to your family, friends and visitors.
