Washington State revenues are up by about $126 million more than previously thought, reporters learned Thursday in what may have been the most unremarkable meetings of the state’s Economic and Revenue Forecast Council in some time.

Here’s the Associated Press report on the meeting.

The news is good on a few counts. For one, it means the council is doing a decent job predicting what state revenues will be. And it never hurts to have a little more cash in the kitty.

The bottom line is budget writers will have a surplus in the $2 billion range to play with, pretty much what they expected coming into session.

Members of the council said they’d like to put the extra into savings.

“I think that clearly will be our intention,” said Sen. Craig Pridemore, D-Vancouver.

“I think there’s a lot of unanimity about putting some of this away,” said Rep. Jim McIntire, a Seattle Democrat and council chairman.

The House is expected to release its two-year budget proposal next week.

IN OTHER NEWS: I just got done watching Washington State’s 70-54 victory over Oral Roberts in the first round of the NCAA men’s basketball tourney. They had it on in the cafeteria on campus and lobbyists and others scurrying about stopped now and again to catch a score.

After the game was over I tried finding the Husky game but was unable to. Must be on later.
